Why Odessa
Odessa is a city situated along the southwestern edge of the Llano Estacado in West Texas, sitting directly above the oil and natural gas reserves of the Permian Basin. Serving as the seat of Ector County with portions extending into Midland County, the community gained widespread fame through its feature in the book and film Friday Night Lights. It also holds historical connections to notable political figures, having once served as the home for First Lady Barbara Bush and former U.S. presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.
The settlement was established in 1881 as a water stop and cattle-shipping hub along the Texas and Pacific Railway. Russian railway workers named the location after Odessa in the Russian Empire, comparing the surrounding shortgrass prairies to the steppes of their homeland. The community became a county seat in 1891 and was officially incorporated as a city in 1927 following the discovery of oil on the nearby Connell Ranch, initiating a long cycle of energy-driven growth throughout the twentieth century.
Visitors to Odessa can explore a variety of local cultural institutions and unique historical sites. The campus of Odessa College houses The Globe of the Great Southwest, which features a replica of William Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and hosts an annual Shakespeare festival. Additional local heritage is displayed at the Texon Santa Fe Depot and the Parker House Museum, which highlights the lifestyle of an early 1900s ranching family. On the campus of the University of Texas Permian Basin, the Presidential Museum and Leadership Library offers exhibits dedicated to the office of the American presidency and the Republic of Texas. The surrounding area also features a 550-foot-wide impact crater located southwest of the city, alongside an artistic installation of 31 public jackrabbit statues.
Athletics form a key component of the local community, centered on high-school football at the expansive Ratliff Stadium—home to the Odessa Bronchos and Permian Panthers—and junior ice hockey played by the Odessa Jackalopes at Ector County Coliseum. Geographically, the area experiences a hot semiarid climate characterized by hot, sunny summers and dry, cool winters. Daily temperature ranges can be wide, accompanied by frequent strong winds, with most precipitation arriving as rainfall during the late spring and summer months.
