Why Overland Park

Overland Park is a major suburban city situated in Johnson County in northeastern Kansas. Positioned roughly 13 miles south-southwest of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, it stands as the most populous suburb within the Kansas City metropolitan region and the second-largest city in the state of Kansas. Geographically, the municipality covers more than 75 square miles across nearly the entire north-to-south expanse of Johnson County, sharing borders with numerous surrounding communities, including Olathe, Leawood, Lenexa, and Shawnee.

The terrain lies along the northern margin of the Osage Plains, just south of the Kansas River. Multiple natural waterways traverse the city's landscape, with Turkey Creek flowing through the far northern sector, while the Blue River and its local tributaries—including Indian Creek, Tomahawk Creek, Negro Creek, Coffee Creek, and Wolf Creek—drain the central and southern areas. Most of the territory situated north of 159th Street is recognized as part of the regional area known as Shawnee Mission.

The settlement was initially established in 1905 when developer William B. Strang Jr. laid out subdivisions along an old military route that eventually became the city's main thoroughfare. Strang helped establish central portions of what became downtown Overland Park. The community was officially incorporated as a first-class city in May 1960 with a population of 28,085, after which it experienced rapid residential and geographic expansion through traditional suburban development and subsequent annexations over the following decades.

Today, Overland Park functions as a prominent commercial center with a daytime population that increases substantially due to incoming workers. The local economy relies heavily on the service sector, led by primary industries such as healthcare, retail trade, professional and technical services, finance, insurance, and information technology. The business landscape features major corporate offices and facilities, including the Overland Park Xchange building, alongside campuses for engineering, technology, and telecommunications organizations.

The area experiences a transitional climate characterized by hot, humid summers alongside cold, dry winters. Overland Park is integrated into the broader regional transportation infrastructure and is easily reached via several major expressways that pass through the city, including Interstate 435, Interstate 35, Interstate 635, and U.S. Route 69.
