Why Palm Coast

Palm Coast is a city situated in northeastern Flagler County, Florida. Bordered to the east by the Intracoastal Waterway, it is located 25 miles south of St. Augustine and 30 miles north of Daytona Beach, while Jacksonville lies 62 miles to the north and Orlando 86 miles to the southwest. Across the Intracoastal Waterway is the unincorporated barrier island community known as the Hammock, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The city's boundaries also touch Flagler Beach to the southeast and extend toward Bunnell to the southwest.

Covering a total area of 90.8 square miles, Palm Coast consists primarily of land along with nearly one square mile of water. Interstate 95 splits the city into two distinct halves and features three separate interchanges, while U.S. Route 1 runs along the western side. Crossing the Intracoastal Waterway to reach the eastern barrier island is facilitated by the Hammock Dunes Bridge, a 65-foot-high, privately operated toll structure. The local area features a humid subtropical climate, typical of northern Florida, and periodically experiences the effects of passing tropical storms and hurricanes.

In the late 1950s, the land was dominated by pine forests and swamps, dotted with a few farms, beach houses, and a turpentine distillery where visitors paid fees to hunt and fish. Modern development commenced in 1969 through the ITT Community Development Corporation, which established thousands of residential lots. To manage the regional water table, developers constructed an extensive water management network comprising 46 miles of freshwater canals and 23 miles of saltwater canals. After operating for years under a county service district, local citizens voted to officially incorporate Palm Coast as a council-manager city in late 1999.

For outdoor recreation, Palm Coast features more than 130 miles of interconnected trails that run through local parks and nature preserves. Another focal point is European Village, a mixed-use commercial and residential district located in the Palm Harbor area near the Hammock Dunes Bridge. Built to mirror the architecture of a traditional European town center, the complex centers around an open-air plaza with residential condominiums located above commercial ground floors. The village features over a dozen restaurants and bars, boutiques, salons, a Sunday farmers market, and a central stage that hosts community events and live weekend music.
