Nestled in downtown Windhoek, Namibia, Parliament Gardens is a small, historic park situated right between the iconic Christuskirche and the Tintenpalast, Namibia's Parliament building. Laid out in 1932 as the Tintenpalast gardens and renamed after Namibian independence in 1990, this delightful, shady space offers a glimpse into the country's rich national history. Once an olive plantation, the grounds still feature a peaceful olive grove, alongside a bowling green lined with vibrant bougainvilleas and a charming thatched-roof clubhouse.
As you explore the area near the main parliament entrance steps, you will spot three prominent bronze statues honoring Namibian nationalists: Herero chief Hosea Kutako—Namibia's very first post-independence monument—alongside Hendrik Samuel Witbooi and Theophilus Hamutumbangela. The gardens even hosted the 2016 opening of the Namibian Parliament during a joint sitting event. Historically, Rough Guides noted the gardens as a popular spot for lunchtime picnics or students relaxing on the lawns.
However, travelers should note an important update: the gardens have been closed to the public since January 2017 for an ongoing bio-rehabilitation exercise. Despite a petition in 2022 to reopen the grounds, Parliament Gardens remains closed as of November 2025, but viewing its historic exterior and surrounding landmarks remains worthwhile.
