Welcome to Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, where you can discover the Windhoek Synagogue. If you are exploring regional religious history, this landmark offers a fascinating look into the country's heritage. Founded in 1924 by Rabbi I. L.

Landau, this historic house of worship holds a unique place in local culture as an Orthodox Jewish synagogue. It stands today as the only active synagogue in all of Namibia, owned and operated by the dedicated Windhoek Hebrew Congregation. When you learn about its past, you will find a resilient story. In November 2015, the community actually announced plans to close and sell the synagogue, mainly because none of the remaining local members viewed themselves as Orthodox Jews.

However, despite these past plans for closure, reports in 2021 confirmed that the congregation was active once again. While another synagogue previously existed in the town of Keetmanshoop between 1927 and 1973, the Windhoek location remains the sole active site for the Jewish community in the nation. Visiting this unique location gives you a direct connection to a vibrant, enduring piece of Namibian history right in the heart of the capital city.
