Why Parma

Parma is a major suburb situated in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, roughly eight miles south of Cleveland. Encompassing an area of approximately 20 square miles, it stands as the largest suburb in the state. The municipality shares its borders with Cleveland and Brooklyn to the north, Brooklyn Heights and Seven Hills to the east, North Royalton and Broadview Heights to the south, and Brook Park, Middleburg Heights, and Parma Heights to the west.

The region was surveyed in 1806 and initially referred to as Greenbriar, named for the wild bushes found throughout the area. Settlers first arrived from New York State in 1816. In 1826, the township was officially organized and renamed Parma, following a suggestion by a local doctor who had recently returned from Italy and found inspiration in the Italian city of Parma. During the 1920s, the community transitioned from a farming town into a suburban village through ambitious developments such as the Ridgewood Gardens model village. Parma formally incorporated as a city in 1931.

Among the prominent historic landmarks is the Henninger House, a stone structure constructed in 1849 that stands as the city's oldest home. Situated on one of the higher points in Cuyahoga County, the site was previously utilized by Erie Indians for fire signals. Local conservation efforts led by the West Creek Preservation Agency focus on protecting local history and natural environments, including the West Creek Watershed and the proposed Quarry Creek Historic District.

Parma is also recognized for its cultural background and is home to the largest Ukrainian community in Ohio, maintaining a sister-city partnership with Lviv, Ukraine. The city serves as the seat for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saint Josaphat. Visitors can explore local heritage within the Ukrainian Village commercial district along State Road. Commercial activity is also centered at The Shoppes at Parma, an expansive shopping district that opened as a shopping plaza in 1956 at the intersection of Ridge Road and West Ridgewood Drive.
