Why Pasadena

Pasadena is a city situated in Harris County, Texas, within the greater Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan region. Bordered by the Houston Ship Channel to the north and reaching southeast toward Galveston Bay, the area experiences a climate marked by hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Founded in 1893 by John H. Burnett, who named it after Pasadena, California, due to its verdant scenery, the community officially incorporated in 1928 and today stands as a prominent urban center in the county.

Prior to European settlement, the Galveston Bay shoreline was inhabited by Indigenous Karankawa and Atakapan peoples, particularly the Akokisa. Spanish explorers charted the surrounding bay, and in the early nineteenth century, the privateer Jean Lafitte maintained bases around the area. In 1836, the concluding clash of the Texas Revolution occurred nearby, leading to the capture of Mexican General Santa Anna along Vince's Bayou in modern Pasadena—an event that earned the local area a reputation as a birthplace of Texas. Agricultural development expanded shortly after, dominated by the extensive Allen Ranch established in the 1840s.

The local economy transformed significantly during the twentieth century. Following a severe hurricane in 1900, a massive relief effort introduced strawberry farming to the area, turning Pasadena into a leading regional fruit producer alongside early Japanese rice growers. The Texas oil boom quickly brought petroleum refining to the city between 1917 and 1920, establishing a deep connection to heavy industry and petrochemical processing. Economic activities later expanded into maritime shipping, solar panel manufacturing, healthcare, and aerospace endeavors tied to the nearby NASA Johnson Space Center.

Visitors to Pasadena can explore several historical and cultural features. The city hosts the Pasadena Historical Museum, the Bay Area Museum, and the Armand Bayou Nature Center. Performing arts and entertainment are represented by a community theater, an annual rodeo, and the Pasadena Philharmonic Orchestra. The city honors its agricultural roots through the annual Pasadena Strawberry Festival, while its country music history remains recognized for the former Gilley's honky-tonk, which served as the backdrop for the 1980 film Urban Cowboy.
