Initially established as a modest Jesuit mission hut between the Tamanduateí and Anhangabaú rivers by priests like Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta, this site quickly became the heart of spiritual and educational life in early Brazil. Throughout its turbulent history, the complex faced expulsions of the Jesuit order, served as the house for colonial governors, and even suffered a collapse in 1896 before being faithfully rebuilt in its original 17th-century sober Mannerist style.

When you visit today, you will see the carefully reconstructed colonial church façade, tower, and school buildings. Inside, you can explore the Anchieta Museum, opened in 1979, which holds over 600 historic items.
