Why Pergamino
Situated in the Province of Buenos Aires, Pergamino is an Argentine city that serves as the administrative seat of the surrounding county, Pergamino Partido. Long appreciated for its fertile land and natural springs, the area was originally home to the Charrúa and Araucanian indigenous peoples. In the 1620s, Spanish colonists noted the location as a stopover on the trade passage connecting Buenos Aires and Córdoba. The settlement received its name in 1626, inspired by parchment paper discovered at the site and a native term signifying red soil.
During the colonial era, the community developed alongside trade and agricultural pursuits. Recurrent conflicts led to the construction of a military fort in 1749, which was destroyed in 1751 and subsequently rebuilt in 1769. The site played a strategic role during the battles for Argentine independence, including a prominent 1815 mutiny. The area later saw rapid expansion driven by intensive agriculture, particularly maize cultivation. The arrival of the Central Argentine Railway in 1882 further accelerated growth, leading to Pergamino's official designation as a city in 1895.
Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Pergamino attracted significant waves of European and Middle Eastern immigrants, including Basque, Piedmontese, Provençal, and Lebanese settlers. British railway technicians also settled in the city, helping establish the local football team, Club Atlético Douglas Haig, in 1918. Architectural highlights from this era include the Hotel Roma, an Art Nouveau building opened in 1913, as well as the main parish church and city hall, both completed in 1930. Cultural institutions like the Municipal Fine Arts Museum, established in 1936, further enriched urban life.
In addition to its historic architecture and arts scene, Pergamino holds a prominent place in Argentine agricultural and industrial history. Recognised as the National Capital of the Seed, the region is a major contributor to the country's cereal harvest, specializing in soy, maize, and seed production, supported by the National Agricultural Laboratory. Over the decades, the city also developed into a manufacturing hub, particularly for textiles, lumber, and furniture, while hosting scientific facilities such as the National Viral Research Institute. Higher education is represented by a local campus of the National University of Northwestern Buenos Aires.
Pergamino experiences a humid subtropical climate characterised by hot, humid summers and mild to cool weather during the winter months. The city is accessible via the Route 8 highway network and sits along the Pergamino River, which features protective levees and canals. The community maintains a deep historical connection to notable national figures, including influential folk musician Atahualpa Yupanqui and former Argentine President Arturo Illia, both born in the city.
