Why Plano
Plano is a major city in the U.S. state of Texas, located primarily in Collin County with a small portion extending into Denton County. Situated approximately 17 miles from Downtown Dallas, it serves as one of the primary suburbs within the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Encompassing over 71 square miles, the city rests on flat plains—from which it derived its name, taken from the Spanish word for flat—and is organized on a grid layout. Plano experiences a humid subtropical climate where January is typically the coolest month, July is the warmest, and May receives the highest average rainfall.
Native American tribes including the Comanche, Caddo, and Wichita originally inhabited and traveled through the region. Settlers established farms, mills, and shops in the early 1840s, leading to the town's incorporation in 1873 following the construction of the Houston and Central Texas Railway. After a major fire destroyed the business district in 1881, the community rebuilt and expanded rapidly during the late 20th century. Today, Plano is a major economic hub hosting the headquarters of corporate entities such as Frito-Lay, Pizza Hut, JCPenney, and Toyota Motor North America. Due to this extensive corporate presence, approximately 80 percent of visitors to the city travel on business.
Visitors to Plano can explore several commercial, historic, and cultural districts. The downtown area and Legacy West feature dining, retail, and housing constructed around New Urbanism design principles. Major retail centers include The Shops at Legacy and The Shops at Willow Bend. Local history is preserved at sites like the 1891 Heritage Farmstead Museum and the 1908 Plano Station of the Texas Electric Railway. Cultural facilities include six public library branches as well as performing arts venues such as the Courtyard Theater, the Cox Playhouse, and McCall Plaza.
Plano manages over 3,800 acres of parkland and open space. Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve spans 800 acres and connects via bike trails to Bob Woodruff Park, which features a tree estimated to be more than 200 years old. Additional natural areas include the 200-acre Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and Haggard Park. The city hosts recurring annual events, including the Plano AsiaFest at Haggard Park in May and the Plano Balloon Festival at Oak Point Park in September. Public recreational amenities throughout the city include five recreation centers, public pools, dedicated dog parks, and outdoor ziplining facilities.
