Why Plymouth

Located roughly ten miles west of downtown Minneapolis in Hennepin County, Plymouth is a major suburban community within the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan region. Spanning an area of more than 35 square miles, including over two and a half square miles of open water, it ranks as Minnesota's seventh-largest city, with a population exceeding 81,000 as recorded in the 2020 census.

The region's history originates with the Dakota people, who established an encampment at the northern shoreline of Medicine Lake, a name reflecting the Dakota term Mdewakanton, translated as "Lake of the Spirit." European presence began in 1848 when explorer Antoine LeCounte arrived, eventually building the first local cabin. Formal settlement began near Parkers Lake in 1855, and the area was officially designated as Plymouth in 1858. Following early development, hotels were built along Medicine Lake by 1863, establishing it as an early local tourist destination. Farming served as the dominant profession for residents until the middle of the twentieth century, after which the area steadily shifted from a rural community into an incorporated suburb.

Today, Plymouth is served by three major highway routes: Interstate 494, U.S. Highway 169, and Minnesota State Highway 55. The local municipal infrastructure encompasses 300 miles of city streets along with 863 cul-de-sacs. The city also acts as a commercial hub, hosting the corporate headquarters for several enterprises, including Select Comfort, OneBeacon, Christopher & Banks, and Tonka Water.

Educational facilities across the city are distributed among five public school districts, notably Wayzata Public Schools, which operates Wayzata High School—the state's largest secondary school by student enrollment. The city is also home to private institutions and higher education facilities, including the Free Lutheran Bible College and Seminary and Central Baptist Theological Seminary.

Plymouth experiences a Midwestern humid continental climate marked by warm, humid summers and cold winters. Summer high temperatures average around 83 degrees Fahrenheit, with rainfall occurring year-round and peaking in June. Winter conditions bring average high temperatures of 23 degrees Fahrenheit and lows averaging 3 degrees Fahrenheit, providing distinct seasonal changes throughout the calendar year.
