Welcome to Pope Park, a historic public green space located right in Hartford, Connecticut. Originally donated in 1895 by industrialist Colonel Albert Augustus Pope—founder of the Pope Manufacturing Company that produced automobiles and Columbia bicycles—this space was envisioned for his factory employees and city residents alike. When you explore the grounds, you are walking through landscape design history.

The famed Olmsted Brothers design firm crafted the park between 1898 and 1903, weaving it into an ambitious ring of seven Hartford parks. As you stroll along the resurfaced and redesigned pathways, you can appreciate how the landscape evolved across three original sections: Hollowmead, Bankside Grove along the former path of the Park River, and a cozy four-acre park space. While urban shifts like the 1940s underground river diversion and the 1969 construction of Interstate 84 altered the original layout, ongoing care and master planning—including the removal of bisecting roads and major cleanup efforts—have revitalized the experience.

Visit Pope Park to connect with local industrial heritage, enjoy historic landscape architecture, and take a peaceful walk through one of Hartford’s historic ring parks.
