Founded in 1842 and opened in 1844, this state capital treasure is the oldest continually operating public art museum in the United States and the largest art museum in Connecticut, offering 75,000 square feet of exhibition space. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum is housed in a distinctive castle-like building featuring five wings built in various architectural styles ranging from Tudor Revival and Renaissance Revival to International.
