Why Portage

Portage is a city situated in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, within the United States. It functions as one of the two primary urban centers forming the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area, which held a total population of 261,670 during the 2020 census. In that same census year, Portage itself recorded a population of 48,891 residents across a predominantly urban footprint, with only a tiny fraction of its area classified as rural.

Geographically, the city encompasses a total area of 35.17 square miles, of which 32.23 square miles consist of land and 2.94 square miles are composed of water. Two prominent bodies of water inside the municipality are Austin Lake and West Lake, positioned adjacent to one another and divided by Portage Road. Austin Lake, located in the southeastern portion of the city, draws its name from Moses Austin, who relocated to the area from Genesee County, New York, in 1833. A small community known as Austin or Austin Lake subsequently developed along the northern shore, where a local post office named Austin's Lake functioned between 1850 and 1853, and the area later served as a stop along the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in 1867.

Initial pioneer settlement in Portage dates back to 1830, and the community formally incorporated as a city in 1963. Decades after its incorporation, on May 7, 2024, Portage experienced a high-end EF2 tornado that inflicted extensive property damage throughout the community. The storm impacted more than 500 structures and completely destroyed 60 buildings, including a local strip mall and a FedEx distribution center that suffered a severe roof collapse.

In terms of commerce and industry, Portage hosts significant medical and manufacturing operations. The city is home to the largest manufacturing site operated by Pfizer, spanning 1,300 acres. This facility played a key historical role on December 13, 2020, when federal authorities prepared millions of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine doses on-site for national distribution during a major public health initiative. Additionally, the medical technology firm Stryker Corporation, originally founded in nearby Kalamazoo in 1941, established its corporate headquarters in Portage in 2023 and maintains several manufacturing facilities across the city.

Educational services across the city are primarily delivered by the Portage Public Schools district. Portions of the municipality are also served by neighboring school systems, including Comstock Public Schools, Vicksburg Community Schools, and Schoolcraft Community Schools.
