Why Prabumulih
Prabumulih is an inland municipality situated in the heart of South Sumatra province, Indonesia, located at the geographical coordinates of 3°25′58″S and 104°14′8″E. Covering an overall administrative area of 447.31 square kilometers, the city occupies a central position within the surrounding region. In terms of geographical boundaries, Prabumulih is almost entirely surrounded by the territory of Muara Enim Regency, with the exception of a short border stretch shared with Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency.
Originally administered as part of Muara Enim Regency, Prabumulih was formally separated to become an independent city on June 21, 2001. Following its establishment as an autonomous urban entity, its population has grown steadily over the years. Official enumeration from the 2010 census recorded 161,814 inhabitants, which rose to 193,196 individuals by the 2020 census. By mid-2024, official demographic estimates placed the population at 213,523 people, consisting of 107,532 male residents and 105,991 female residents.
Administratively, Prabumulih is divided into six districts, known as kecamatan. These six districts encompass a total of 37 sub-divisions, consisting of 12 rural villages designated as desa and 25 urban communities classified as kelurahan. Each district contains its own administrative center to handle local civic matters and is served by specific postal code designations.
The economy of Prabumulih relies heavily on energy resource development and agriculture. It ranks as one of the primary areas for natural gas and crude oil extraction in South Sumatra, with petroleum production in the locality tracing back to the 1920s. Beyond its energy sector, the city serves as a major regional center for pineapple cultivation. This agricultural legacy has earned Prabumulih the local designation of "kota nanas," which translates to Pineapple City.
Regarding transportation infrastructure, the city was previously served by its own local airport facility. However, this airport is no longer active for aviation services.
