When visiting the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul, you will find "Progress of the State" perched above the main entrance's south portico at the base of the dome. Created by sculptors Daniel Chester French and Edward Clark Potter, this striking statuary group was completed and raised to the roof in 1906. It features a classical quadriga arrangement—a chariot pulled by four horses—crafted from hammered copper over a steel framework and gilded in brilliant 23-karat gold leaf.
Architect Cass Gilbert chose to install this unique monument over the portico instead of a traditional triangular pediment, adapting an earlier design from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. As you look up, you can admire the rich allegory woven into the artwork: the four horses symbolize the classical elements of earth, air, fire, and water, while two female figures representing industry and agriculture guide them. Atop the chariot stands a male charioteer personifying Minnesota and prosperity, holding a horn of plenty alongside a Roman Legion-style standard inscribed with the state's name.
It is a brilliant spectacle of American symbolism and historic craftsmanship.
