Why Saint Paul

Saint Paul is the capital of Minnesota and the seat of Ramsey County, situated in east-central Minnesota along the Mississippi River. Together with adjacent Minneapolis to its west, it anchors the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The city's geography is defined by its position on steep sandstone bluffs and palisades carved by ancient glacial activity around the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers. Natural water features within the city limits include major lakes such as Lake Como, Lake Phalen, and Pig's Eye Lake.

Indigenous peoples have long inhabited the area, including the ancient Hopewell culture, who constructed burial mounds visible at Indian Mounds Park, and later the Mdewakanton Dakota, who considered the surrounding river landscape sacred. European settlement expanded following an 1805 land acquisition negotiated by Zebulon Pike and the construction of Fort Snelling in 1819. Originally known informally as Pig's Eye or Pig's Eye Landing after a local bootlegger's tavern, the community was renamed in 1841 when Father Lucien Galtier built the Chapel of Saint Paul. It became the territorial capital in 1849 and subsequently developed into a major nineteenth-century riverboat port and rail hub, serving as the headquarters for industrialist James J. Hill's Great Northern Railway.

Perched on a hill overlooking a bend in the river, the Minnesota State Capitol anchors the central district alongside state government offices. Downtown Saint Paul features skyscraper construction subject to height limits due to proximity to the nearby airport's flight path, alongside major institutions such as the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minnesota History Center, and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. The city maintains a highly rated municipal park system encompassing 160 parks and 41 recreation centers, including parkland at Battle Creek, as well as resources like the Hmong Archives that highlight the area's immigrant heritage. Sports fans can attend professional hockey and team sports at Grand Casino Arena, soccer at Allianz Field, or minor-league baseball at CHS Field.

Saint Paul experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Due to its northern inland location away from large moderating bodies of water, winters are frigid and snowy, contributing to cold average annual temperatures across the metropolitan region. Summers are warm to hot and humid, with weather throughout the year encompassing rain, thunderstorms, sleet, and ice.
