Why Qingyuan
Located along the banks of the Bei River in northern Guangdong province, Qingyuan is the largest prefecture-level administrative division by land area in the province. Situated just north of the Tropic of Cancer, it covers more than 19,000 square kilometers, which accounts for over ten percent of Guangdong's total territory. The region features a landscape where more than half of the land is mountainous, incorporating sections of the southern Nan Ling range with terrain rising from the southeast to the northwest. Its main urban area lies approximately 60 kilometers from Guangzhou and roughly 200 kilometers from both Hong Kong and Macau.
Qingyuan has a population of nearly four million inhabitants, with a significant concentration residing in the central urbanized districts of Qingcheng and Qingxin. While Han Chinese make up over 95 percent of the population, the area is also home to Zhuang and Yao minority communities. Cantonese is the primary language spoken throughout the region. Historically, Qingyuan served as a prefecture during the Northern and Southern dynasties before its status was downgraded to a county in 590 AD during the Sui dynasty. It was subsequently governed by Guangzhou prefecture through the Qing dynasty until 1911, later being designated as a prefecture-level city.
Visitors to Qingyuan can explore a wide variety of scenic locations and natural features across its counties and districts. Cultural and historical sites include Feilai Temple and the Feixia Scenic Spots, along with the Baojing Palace in Yingde. Notable natural landscapes encompass the Taihe Ancient Cave in Qingxin, the Underground River of Lianzhou, Peak Shikengkong in Yangshan County, Niuyuzui, Little Biejiang of Lianyang, and the Three Gorges of Huangchuan. Waterways and recreational areas include Huangteng Gorge, Huanghua Lake in Fogang, and thermal locations such as Sankeng Hot Spring and Yinzhan Hot Springs.
The city experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, characterized by an average annual temperature of 20.7 degrees Celsius, around 1,900 millimeters of rainfall, and over 310 frost-free days annually. Qingyuan acts as a key regional transport and economic center, connected to Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta via Highway 107. Additional infrastructure includes National Highway 106, the Beijing–Guangzhou Railway, and regional shipping hubs such as the ports of Qingyuan, Yingde, Lianzhou, and Yangshan. High-speed rail connections are provided by the Qingyuan railway station on the Wuhan–Guangzhou line, complemented by the Qingyuan Maglev.
