Why Qinhuangdao
Qinhuangdao is a coastal port city located in the northern Hebei province of China, along the northwestern shore of the Bohai Sea. Positioned approximately 300 kilometers east of Beijing, the municipality covers more than 7,800 square kilometers and borders Tangshan, Chengde, and Liaoning Province. Serving as the primary port for Hebei, the city features three primary developed districts: the central urban hub of Haigang, the seaside resort area of Beidaihe, and the historic district of Shanhaiguan.
The city's name translates to Qin Emperor island, deriving from traditions surrounding Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of Qin, who conducted a survey tour in the region around 210 BC. The island reference originally designated a small offshore landmass in the present-day Haigang District, which was permanently joined to the mainland by dredged silt in the late Qing dynasty. Modern port and railway developments began expanding the area around the turn of the 20th century.
Each of the city's key districts provides distinct cultural and geographical highlights. Shanhaiguan is a major destination famous for containing the eastern end of the Great Wall. Beidaihe serves as a prominent seaside summer resort long utilized as a retreat for high-level political figures. Haigang forms the central harbor core of Qinhuangdao and is home to higher education institutions, including Yanshan University.
Visitors to the region can explore a range of public parks and recreational sites. Established in 1995, the Qinhuangdao Wildlife Park is the second largest wildlife park in China. In the urban area, Tanghe River Park hosts the Red Ribbon, a recognized steel sculpture running along the park that incorporates seating, lighting, and displays of native vegetation. The city also features the Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center Stadium, which hosted preliminary football matches during the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Qinhuangdao experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate defined by four clear seasons. Influenced by Siberian air masses, winters are cold and dry, with January daily temperatures averaging −5.6 °C. Summers are hot and humid due to the East Asian Monsoon, averaging 24.7 °C in July and August, when around 70 percent of annual rainfall occurs. The city is accessible by air via Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport and by road along the Jingshen Expressway linking Beijing and Shenyang.
