Why Qitaihe
Qitaihe is a prefecture-level city situated in the eastern region of Heilongjiang province, China. It holds the distinction of being the geographically smallest prefecture-level division in the province, spanning an area of 6,223 square kilometers, and also records the second smallest population among Heilongjiang's cities. The municipality consists of three urban districts alongside surrounding rural territory, housing a population that was recorded at over 920,000 during the 2010 census and projected at over 726,000 in 2024.
Human settlement in the area dates back approximately 3,000 years to the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, when the territory was inhabited by the ancient Sushen group, who are recognized as ancestors of the Manchu. Coal deposits were first uncovered in 1910, though industrial exploitation began in earnest in 1958 when regional authorities directed extraction efforts in Boli County. A dedicated mining bureau was created in 1961, and Qitaihe was subsequently established as a pilot district testing the combination of government administration and enterprise management. After being designated a county-level city under Jiamusi in 1970, Qitaihe attained full prefecture-level status in 1983, at which point Boli County was placed under its administrative jurisdiction.
The city is defined by its abundant natural resources, featuring mineral deposits and significant freshwater reserves. The area contains 26 reservoirs, including the Taoshan Reservoir, which has a water storage capacity of 264 million steres. Qitaihe ranks third in Heilongjiang for coal reserves, holding 5.3 billion tons, and also possesses gold and graphite. Mining and power generation form key components of the local economy, with major entities such as the Qitaihe Coal Mining Group and the Qitaihe No. 1 Power Generation Company operating in the city. Qitaihe serves as the sole pilot city for coal recycling within Heilongjiang province.
Qitaihe experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate, characterized by long, bitterly cold, dry winters along with humid, very warm summers. Rail and road networks provide regional connectivity, with the Tumen-Jiamusi Railway and the Boli-Qitaihe Railway linking the municipality directly to destinations such as Mudanjiang and Jiamusi. Commercial air travel is accessible via Jiamusi Airport, Jixi Airport, and Mudanjiang Airport, all of which offer regular domestic flights and are situated less than two hours away from the city.
