Why Quanzhou

Quanzhou is a prefecture-level port city located on the northern shore of the Jin River along Quanzhou Bay, facing the Taiwan Strait in southern Fujian Province, China. Situated on a tract of land between the Jin and Luoyang river estuaries, the municipality extends inland into hilly and mountainous terrain. Covering an area of 11,245 square kilometers, it represents Fujian's most populous metropolitan region, forming a central component of the province's southern coast alongside neighboring areas such as Xiamen and Zhangzhou.

Historically known to foreign traders as Zaiton or Zayton, Quanzhou rose to international prominence from the eleventh through the fourteenth centuries as a primary starting point for the Maritime Silk Road. During the tenth century, local rulers planted Indian coral trees throughout the area, giving rise to its traditional nickname as the Coral-tree city. In 2021, the site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China," recognizing its extensive archaeological remains, commercial history, and rich religious heritage.

During its peak as an international maritime hub, the city welcomed merchants, scholars, and travelers from across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, including Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta. This cosmopolitan environment fostered a unique collection of religious architecture. Visitors can observe historical sites associated with diverse faith traditions, including ancient Buddhist monasteries, Islamic mosques, Christian churches, and Hindu temples featuring carved images of Shiva and Vishnu. Notable landmarks from this era include the historical Luoyang Bridge and the twelfth-century Anping Bridge.

The historical economy of Quanzhou was driven by vibrant maritime trade in items such as jade-colored celadon ceramics, sugar, alcohol, salt, gemstones, and spices. An imperial maritime trade bureau was established in the city during the eleventh century to manage maritime customs. Over time, factors such as harbor siltation, regional conflicts, and shifting imperial trade policies influenced the city's commercial focus.

Quanzhou features a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, where temperatures moderate between 0 and 38 degrees Celsius throughout the year. During the summer months, typhoons occasionally bring strong rainfall to the coastal region. The city's urban area encompasses several central districts, surrounding county-level cities, and specialized development zones.
