Why Quinte West
Quinte West is a municipality situated along the western shoreline of the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario in Southern Ontario, Canada. Though geographically positioned within Hastings County, it functions as a distinct administrative entity. The city serves as the Lake Ontario terminus for the Trent–Severn Waterway and covers an expansive territory of nearly 500 square kilometers, incorporating coastal access, river passages, and a mix of rural and urban communities.
The municipality was officially formed on January 1, 1998, through the consolidation of four neighboring localities: the city of Trenton, the village of Frankford, and the townships of Murray and Sidney. Trenton is the largest community in Quinte West and serves as its primary commercial and administrative center. Among the region's historic settlements, Frankford was first established by European settlers in the 1820s after a grist mill was constructed along the Trent River. The community went by several early names before being named after Lieutenant-Governor Sir Francis Bond Head and eventually incorporating as a village in 1920.
In addition to its main centers, Quinte West encompasses a wide selection of smaller hamlets, coastal areas, and rural districts. The landscape includes shoreline communities and scenic water features such as Weller's Bay and Barcovan Beach, along with inland communities including Batawa, Bayside, Carrying Place, Wooler, Stockdale, and Oak Lake. These varied localities offer distinct access points across the region's waterways and rural countryside.
A central feature of Quinte West is 8 Wing Trenton, the Royal Canadian Air Force's main air transportation hub and the area's largest employer. Serving as Canada's largest air base, it supports domestic and global military operations with infrastructure that includes a paved runway measuring over 10,000 feet, round-the-clock air traffic control, emergency response services, and an on-site Canada Border Services Agency office. The base exists alongside a diverse industrial landscape, which includes food processing, paper converting, and specialized manufacturing companies.
With a population exceeding 46,000 residents, Quinte West maintains a fully developed network of public infrastructure, local emergency and fire services, and multiple school systems. The community is also served by local radio broadcasting and dedicated community newspapers.
