Why Woodstock
Woodstock is a historic city situated in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, about 128 kilometers from Toronto and 43 kilometers from London, Ontario. Serving as the seat of Oxford County, the community sits at the head of the Thames River. Recognized as the Dairy Capital of Canada and self-promoted as "The Friendly City," it combines a heritage setting with a local economy focused on manufacturing, agricultural commerce, and tourism.
The townsite was chosen around 1800 under Sir John Graves Simcoe, the governor of Upper Canada, with initial European colonization by American immigrants and United Empire Loyalists. British immigration expanded during the 1820s and 1830s. The settlement was incorporated as a town in 1851 and later achieved city status in 1901. Uniquely among Ontario municipalities, Woodstock has preserved all of its original civic administration buildings.
Visitors can explore a variety of historic architecture and cultural landmarks. Downtown Woodstock along Dundas Street features century-old structures housing shops, banks, and restaurants, complemented by wide cobbled sidewalks and seasonal gardens. The city's west end displays notable Victorian streetscapes, particularly along Vansittart Avenue. Among the prominent local heritage sites is the Old Town Hall—built in 1853 and now operating as the Woodstock Museum, a National Historic Site. Other historical buildings include the 1854 Italianate-style former jail, the 1892 Richardsonian Romanesque Oxford County Court House, the 1895 Market Building (now hosting Theatre Woodstock), and the 1901 sandstone City Hall.
Cultural institutions in the city include the Woodstock Art Gallery, situated in the renovated John White Building on Dundas Street, which displays artwork by Florence Carlyle. Local education is represented by a campus of Fanshawe College. Community facilities feature a large recreation center equipped with a hockey arena seating 1,800 spectators, alongside an atrium and banquet hall for public gatherings.
Throughout the year, Woodstock hosts a broad array of public events, arts exhibits, and summer festivals. These include Summer Streetfest, when the downtown corridor is closed to vehicle traffic for shopping and entertainment, as well as Cowapolooza, the Woodstock Fair, Canada's Outdoor Farm Show, the Woodstock Fleece Festival, and the Woodstock Rotary Club Dragon Boat Festival.
