Spanning 72 hectares right next to the historic Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park offers a remarkable journey through ecologically restored arid land. Created in 2006 and opened to the public in 2011, this sanctuary revitalized a rocky landscape once overrun by invasive shrubs. Today, you can explore distinctive volcanic rock and sandstone formations—including the ancient Jodhpur Welded Tuff, a National Geological Monument formed between 745 and 680 million years ago.
As you wander, you will discover around 250 native plant species, such as the vibrant Rohido tree and the succulent Thhor shrub. The park is also a thriving habitat for over 200 bird species, reptiles, and native wildlife like the Indian crested porcupine and five-striped palm squirrel. You can start your visit at the Visitors Centre, housed inside the beautifully restored 17th-century Singhoria Pol gateway, which features an Interpretation Gallery, a small shop, and a cafe.
Beyond the gate, four marked trails ranging from 880 to 1,115 meters guide you through the terrain, passing a native plant nursery, a xeriscape garden, and an old aqueduct gully revealing unique rock textures.
