Why Redding
Redding serves as the county seat of Shasta County and functions as the economic and cultural hub for the Shasta Cascade region in Northern California. Positioned along the Sacramento River at the northwestern edge of the Central Valley, the city sits approximately 162 miles north of Sacramento and 120 miles south of the California-Oregon border. Redding covers about 61.2 square miles, surrounded by mountain ranges to the north, east, and west, with agricultural land extending to the south.
The city's landscape transitions from the Sacramento Valley in its central and southern districts to the foothills of the Cascade Range along its outer borders. Average elevations range from roughly 400 to 500 feet in southern neighborhoods up to 800 feet in areas surrounding downtown. In eastern Redding near the municipal airport, natural vernal pools provide habitat for rare species, including slender Orcutt grass and vernal pool fairy shrimp.
Historically, the area was inhabited by the Wintu Native American tribe, who maintained up to 239 villages across the county. Nonnative settlement began in 1844 when pioneer Pierson B. Reading received the Mexican Rancho Buena Ventura land grant. Known as Poverty Flats during the Gold Rush due to poor placer gold yields, the site was renamed after railroad agent Benjamin Bernard Redding in 1868 when the Central Pacific Railroad purchased land for a terminus. Redding incorporated in 1887 and became the county seat the following year.
During the twentieth century, the local economy was shaped by copper and iron mining, followed by a population boom driven by the construction of the Shasta Dam on the Sacramento River, completed in 1945. Subsequent growth was bolstered by the timber industry, regional water projects, and the construction of Interstate 5. Civic revitalization in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries transformed the downtown area, leading to the restoration of the historic Cascade Theatre and the conversion of the Midtown Mall into an open-air pedestrian street.
Redding features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate marked by cool, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Average daily high temperatures in July linger near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, accompanied by an average annual possible sunshine rate of 88 percent. The rainy season runs from October through April, bringing fog, precipitation, and occasional snowfall influenced by the nearby Cascade and Klamath mountain ranges.
