Step into historic downtown Tacoma, Washington, and discover the Rialto Theater. Built in 1918 by entrepreneur Henry T. Moore and architect Roland E. Borhek to showcase movies, this two-and-a-half-story venue captures the grand, palace-like affluence of post-World War I America.
Today, managed by Tacoma City Theaters, it continues to host entertainment and commercial activities, welcoming you to experience a space listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1992. As you approach on 9th Street, you will admire its striking classical façade, featuring glazed white terra cotta, buff-toned stucco walls, and a turret-like corner entrance capped with a decorative parapet and lighted finials. Look up to see a replicated three-part flower petal marquee projecting over the semi-circular arcaded entry. Once inside, you can explore the beautifully restored lobby, complete with terrazzo flooring, marble kickplating, and a coved ceiling accented by plaster swags of greenery.
Inside the 742-seat auditorium, you will be surrounded by classical plasterwork, hanging chandeliers, and a grand proscenium arch topped by two cherubs blowing trumpets. Do not miss the decorative screens that once held organ pipes, intricately capped with eagles and flags, alongside classic wall sconces and indirect cornice lighting.
