Why Tacoma

Situated along the waters of Puget Sound, Tacoma is a major port city and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington. Positioned approximately 30 miles from both Seattle and Olympia, and roughly 58 miles northwest of Mount Rainier National Park, it serves as the primary economic and cultural hub for the South Sound region. It stands as the second-largest municipality in the Puget Sound area and the third most populous city in the state. Tacoma surrounds Commencement Bay, featuring terrain that ranges from sea level up to 500 feet, with many areas offering clear views of Mount Rainier.

Long before European settlement, the indigenous Puyallup people established settlements on the local river delta. Industrial activity began in the mid-19th century with a water-powered sawmill, followed by residential developments near what is now Old Town. Tacoma earned the nickname "City of Destiny" after being chosen as the western terminus for the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century, a decision driven by the adjacent deep-water harbor. The city's maritime prominence continues through the Port of Tacoma, the largest port in Washington. The city is also historical context for the famous 1940 wind-induced collapse of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Following a mid-century period of decline, Tacoma initiated an extensive downtown revitalization program in the early 1990s. This renewal brought about a restored urban waterfront along the Thea Foss Waterway, the state's first modern electric light rail system (the T Line), and a branch campus of the University of Washington constructed within adapted century-old brick warehouses. The city centers a high density of cultural institutions, including the Washington State History Museum, the Museum of Glass, and the Tacoma Art Museum. Nearby, adjacent to the massive Tacoma Dome, sits America's Car Museum.

Tacoma features numerous architectural landmarks and historic properties. Notable sites include the historic Union Station—now repurposed as a federal courthouse—the 1911 steel lift Murray Morgan Bridge, and preserved properties such as Engine House No. 9 and the William Ross Rust House. Two suspension bridges cross the Tacoma Narrows, connecting the city to the Kitsap Peninsula. Cultural life is anchored by a central Theatre District that includes historic venues like the Pantages and Rialto theaters. The city experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with July and August bringing the highest temperatures and December marking the coldest time of the year.
