Why Richardson

Richardson is an inner suburb situated in Dallas and Collin counties in northern Texas, bordered primarily by Dallas, Plano, and Garland. Covering approximately 28.6 square miles, the city experiences a humid subtropical climate marked by hot, muggy summers and mild to cool winters. It is widely recognized as a prominent regional employment center, housing the University of Texas at Dallas alongside a dense concentration of telecommunications and technology companies known as the Telecom Corridor.

Initial settlement in the area took place in the 1840s when emigrants from Kentucky and Tennessee established homes near the community of Breckenridge. The local focus shifted in 1873 when the Houston and Texas Central Railway constructed a depot nearby, laying out town blocks and naming the community after railroad secretary Alfred S. Richardson. Following the completion of the Red Brick Road in 1924, property values and traffic rose, leading to official incorporation in 1925. Mid-century expansion accelerated with the opening of major technology campuses, highways, municipal services, parks, and higher education facilities.

Modern Richardson supports a broad economic base encompassing telecommunications, insurance, healthcare, technology, and finance. The city is also home to diverse international communities and cultural centers. Visitors can explore DFW Chinatown, which contains the Dallas Chinese Community Center, or visit specialized commercial areas, markets, and plazas catering to the region's Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Vietnamese populations.

Cultural and recreational opportunities are anchored by the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts and Corporate Presentations, which serves as the primary performance venue for both the Richardson Symphony Orchestra and the Plano Symphony Orchestra. Next to the arts center, the Galatyn Park urban development features a multi-acre public pedestrian plaza, mixed-use facilities, and a luxury hotel. For outdoor activity and leisure, the municipality maintains local parks, a public library, and two 18-hole golf courses.

Getting to and around Richardson is facilitated by regional highways and public transit. The city is integrated into the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system with four light rail stations connecting key commercial, educational, and cultural destinations.
