Why Rizhao

Rizhao is a coastal prefecture-level city situated in the southeastern part of Shandong province, China, along the shores of the Yellow Sea. Positioned on a peninsula, it borders Qingdao to the northeast, Weifang to the north, and Linyi to the west and southwest, while facing Korea and Japan across the sea to the east. Translating literally to "sunshine," the city is well known for its emphasis on sustainable urban development and was recognized in 2009 by the United Nations as one of the world's most habitable cities.

The area has a long history, having served as a cradle for the ancient Dawenkou and Longshan cultures. It was inhabited by the Dongyi people during the Xia and Shang dynasties, later becoming part of the Ju and Yue States, and eventually falling under Langye Commandery in the Qin dynasty. It was known as Haiqu County during the Western Han period—home to the earliest attested fangsheng pond of an early Buddhist community—and Xihai County under the Eastern Han. Named Mi Prefecture during the Tang dynasty, it gained the name Rizhao Town in 1087 under the Northern Song dynasty because its eastern coastal position allowed it to be the first place to receive sunshine. It became a county in 1184 during the Jin dynasty and eventually reached prefecture-level city status within Shandong in 1989.

Rizhao features a temperate, four-season climate shaped by monsoon influences, transitioning between humid subtropical and humid continental zones. Winters are cool to cold, windy, and generally dry, with January temperatures averaging 0.3 °C (32.5 °F), while summers are warm and humid with an August average of 25.5 °C (77.9 °F). Its coastal location delays the arrival of spring by roughly a month compared to inland Shandong, whereas autumn remains milder. The area receives an annual average of 2,310 hours of bright sunshine and maintains a relative humidity of 69%.

Visitors to Rizhao can explore a variety of scenic destinations and architectural sights. The city features several locations designated with a 4-star national rating, including Wulian Mountain, Daqing Mountain, Wanpingkou Beach, Rizhao Beach National Park, Longmengu, Liujiawan Park, and the Tiantai Mountain Tourism Area. Contemporary cultural architecture is also present, such as the Zaishui Art Museum situated on an artificial lake, accompanied by a promenade, a café, a horseback-riding center, a hotel, and a high concrete church.

Travelers can reach the region via the Rizhao Shanzihe Airport, located in the Houcun town area of Donggang District. Rail transit is available through the Rizhao railway station for local lines and the Rizhao West railway station, which accommodates both local and high-speed services.
