Why Rochester Hills
Rochester Hills is a suburban municipality situated in Oakland County, Michigan, positioned roughly 25 miles north of downtown Detroit. Spanning approximately 33 square miles, the geography of the city is defined by rolling terrain, with elevations rising from 690 feet above sea level in its southeastern quadrant up to 1,032 feet in the northwestern area. Natural water features including the Clinton River and Paint Creek run through the local landscape. The municipality shares borders with Oakland Charter Township to the north, Troy to the south, Shelby Township to the east, and Auburn Hills to the west, while partially surrounding the distinct city of Rochester.
Prior to European settlement, Indigenous peoples including the Potawatomi, Odawa, Wyandot, and Ojibwe inhabited the land. The Potawatomi specifically utilized the local waterways, such as Paint Creek and the Clinton River, for travel, fishing, and crop cultivation until ceding the territory following the 1807 Treaty of Detroit. The initial European settlers arrived in 1817, traveling along Sauk pathways. The area was established as Avon Township in 1835. Following decades of local boundary shifts and municipal reorganization, voters approved a city charter in 1984, adopting the name Rochester Hills to honor the region's topographies and its heritage tied to Rochester.
The city encompasses several distinct geographic sections and recognized neighborhoods. Stony Creek sits at the northeastern edge along the border with Rochester, while the Yates neighborhood occupies the eastern perimeter near Shelby Township. Further south, the area historically designated as Brooklands established its own local identity in the mid-twentieth century. For civic resources, the municipality operates the Rochester Hills Public Library, which also serves residents of adjacent communities through cooperative service agreements.
In addition to its residential districts, Rochester Hills is a center for regional education. Higher learning facilities in the city include Oakland University and Rochester Christian University, both of which provide undergraduate and graduate academic programs across various fields. The municipality's public school infrastructure is primarily provided by Rochester Community Schools—which operates Rochester High School, Rochester Adams High School, and Stoney Creek High School within the city limits—with additional sections falling under the Avondale School District.
