Why Rockwall
Rockwall is a city located in the state of Texas, serving as the county seat of Rockwall County. Situated roughly 20 miles northeast of Dallas, the city is positioned along the eastern shoreline of Lake Ray Hubbard. The community derives its name from distinct subterranean rock structures encountered by early settlers. Although initially suspected to be man-made masonry, these long, straight sandstone dikes intruding Cretaceous marl form sharp angles and a rectangular loop, creating the visual appearance of an intentional wall.
The historical timeline of the surrounding region extends back at least 13,000 to 13,500 years, supported by Paleo-Indian artifacts and Clovis points recovered in nearby North Central Texas counties. The land was subsequently inhabited by the Caddo people, followed by Creek Indians moving into the area in the early nineteenth century. Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1851, uncovering the natural rock features while digging wells. The municipality was officially established in April 1854, later becoming the county seat when Rockwall County was formed in 1873.
Geographically, Rockwall covers a total area of 31.6 square miles, consisting primarily of land along with a minor percentage of water. The area experiences a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by hot, humid summer seasons and generally mild to cool winter periods. Regional transit connections into the city are provided by Interstate 30, U.S. Highway 67, and Texas State Highways 66, 205, and 276, as well as Farm to Market roads 549, 552, and 740. General aviation for small aircraft is served by the Ralph M. Hall/Rockwall Municipal Airport, located two miles east of the city.
Recreational facilities in Rockwall accommodate a variety of land- and water-based pursuits. Lake Ray Hubbard features several boating marinas and is used for water sports such as jet skiing. Within the city, sports locations include baseball fields on Airport Road, the Rockwall Indoor Sports Expo along South 205, and the Landing Point complex, which houses dance space, zipline facilities, and the Texas International Fencing Center. Additionally, golf enthusiasts have access to two courses located within 17 miles of the city center.
