Roman Theatre of Amman 🇯🇴

Located in the eastern part of Amman at the foot of Jabal Al-Joufah, opposite the Amman Citadel, the Roman Theatre of Amman is a famous 2nd-century landmark from the era when the capital was known as Philadelphia. Built into the hillside in honour of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138–161 CE)—as noted by a Greek inscription on a pillar—this steeply raked, 6,000-seat structure was strategically oriented north to keep the sun out of spectators' eyes. As you explore the impressive cavea, you will notice it is divided into three horizontal sections known as diazomata.

Be sure to climb up to the highest section of seats, often called 'the gods.' Despite the distance from the stage, the sheer steepness gives you excellent sightlines and exceptional acoustics. Ground-level side entrances once led to the stage and orchestra; today, the rooms behind them house the Jordan Museum of Popular Tradition and the Jordan Folklore Museum. Beyond its ancient roots, you can experience a living venue that still hosts modern events like the Al-Balad Music Festival and the Amman International Book Fair.

It directly flanks Hashemite Plaza, making it an essential central stop.
