Why Roswell
Roswell is a suburban city located in northern Fulton County, Georgia, bordering Atlanta to the south and positioned along the Chattahoochee River. Recognized as one of the largest cities in the state, it features an affluent National Register Historic District set within an area encompassing 37 square miles of land and water. The area enjoys a humid subtropical climate, marked by abundant rainfall distributed evenly throughout the year.
The town’s origins date back to the 1830s when Roswell King recognized the industrial potential of Vickery Creek and founded the Roswell Mill, which became the largest cotton mill in North Georgia. Enslaved Africans brought from coastal plantations constructed the local infrastructure, mills, homes, and worker residences, introducing their distinct Geechee cultural traditions to the region. Incorporated in 1854, the settlement grew around its manufacturing operations and cotton plantations. During the Civil War, Union forces under General Garrard occupied the town, shipped its mill workers north, and destroyed the mill facility while leaving many homes intact. Rebuilt after the war, Roswell remained in Cobb County until 1932, when it was annexed into Fulton County during the Great Depression.
Today, the city preserves its heritage through historic sites and house museums. Visitors can explore preserved plantation homes, including Barrington Hall, Smith Plantation, and Bulloch Hall, which was the childhood home of President Theodore Roosevelt's mother. Historic industrial remnants are also accessible, such as the ruins of the original mill and its 30-foot dam on Vickery Creek. Local parkland covers more than 900 acres, including a section of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Outdoor recreation is supported by several natural waterways and trails, including Big Creek, Bull Sluice Lake, the Big Creek Greenway, the Roswell Riverwalk Trail, and the Vickery Creek Trail.
Roswell hosts numerous annual events, such as the Roswell Roots festival celebrating Black history and culture in February, the Roswell Magnolia Storytelling Festival, the Riverside Sounds Concert Series, the Roswell Youth Day Parade, and Georgia's largest Memorial Day ceremony. The local economy relies on major sectors including retail, technology, healthcare, and wholesale trade, with several corporate facilities stationed along the State Route 400 high-tech corridor. Additional primary roadways serving the city include State Routes 9, 92, 120, and 140.
