Why Round Rock

Round Rock is a Central Texas city located approximately 15 miles north of Austin within Williamson and Travis counties. Spanning the Balcones Escarpment, the city's geography varies dramatically across its borders. The landscape east of Interstate 35 features the flat, dark, fertile soils of the Blackland Prairie, while the elevated western section consists of the hilly, karst terrain characteristic of the Texas Hill Country.

The area was historically traversed by Native American pathways, including the Double File Trail, which accommodated two riders traveling side by side. Anglo settlement began along Brushy Creek in 1851 near a large, anvil-shaped stone that served as a shallow crossing point for wagons and livestock. Initially called Brushy, the community was renamed Round Rock in 1854 in recognition of the famous landmark. After the Civil War, this creek crossing became a key segment of the Chisholm Trail for northern cattle drives. Today, Chisholm Trail Crossing Park commemorates this era with historical plaques and bronze sculptures of cattle and early pioneers.

Preserved 19th-century architecture is visible in the Old Town area, which includes historic structures like the Saint Charles Hotel. On July 19, 1878, the town was the site of a famous gunfight when Texas Rangers confronted outlaw Sam Bass. Bass was fatally shot during the conflict, which also resulted in the death of a local deputy. Bass is buried at Round Rock Cemetery, and his original tombstone is displayed at the Round Rock Public Library. The historic shootout is reenacted annually during the July 4 Frontier Days Celebration at Old Settlers Park, an area that also features three restored log cabins.

During the early 20th century, cotton farming flourished in the eastern prairie while ranching occupied the western hills. The construction of Interstate 35 through the town in the 1950s prompted a transition toward commercial development. Round Rock subsequently transformed from a quiet suburb into an economic center. It houses the global headquarters of computer company Dell, alongside expansive retail and business developments such as La Frontera, Premium Outlets, and IKEA.

Round Rock features a humid subtropical climate, bringing hot, humid summer conditions alongside mild, cool winters. Visitors can access the city via major regional transport routes, including Interstate 35 and State Highway 45.
