Why Rui’an

Rui'an is a county-level city situated in Zhejiang Province, China, under the administrative jurisdiction of Wenzhou. Covering a land area of 1,271 square kilometers—which expands to 3,037 square kilometers when including water area—the city has a population of 1,125,000 people. It is a coastal destination featuring a burgeoning tourist industry alongside its broader regional prominence.

The history of the city, historically known as Meitou, traces back to approximately 2000 BC, when it was recognized for machine production. Organized trade and commerce grew in the region, and the municipality received its current name in 675 AD. Native residents speak the Rui'an dialect of Wu Chinese. The area is also the origin of notable individuals, including Zeng Liansong, the designer of the national flag of China, and Olympic rower Pan Feihong.

Administratively, the city oversees 49 towns and villages, spanning subdistricts such as Anyang, Jinhu, Yuhai, Dongshan, and Feiyun, as well as towns like Tangxia, Mayu, Taoshan, Huling, and Gaolou. Rui'an holds an important place in modern Chinese economic history as an early trial site for economic reforms and foreign direct investment during the late 1980s. It helped pioneer market-oriented systems, including the joint-stock approach, which contributed to the widely recognized Wenzhou Model of growth.

In addition to tourism, the city maintains an active industrial sector, notably in the manufacturing of plastics and auto accessories. A 20-square-kilometer provincial economic development zone fosters ongoing industrial, commercial, and technological expansion. Geographically coastal, Rui'an possesses salt mines as well as seabed reserves of crude oil and natural gas located approximately 100 nautical miles from the estuary of the Feiyunjiang.

Visitors and transit passengers benefit from a modern infrastructure system. Ground transport options include the coastal highway, State Highway No. 104, the Wenzhou–Fuzhou Railway via Rui'an Station, and Rail Transit Line 2, which began operating in April 2023. Further regional connections are provided by a 10,000-ton seaport, a main railway station, and Wenzhou Yongqiang Airport, all situated within 30 kilometers of the city proper.
