Why Sacheon

Situated along the southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province, Sacheon is a South Korean city famous as the historical location of two significant naval battles during the Seven Year War. The modern municipality was established in 1995 through the unification of Sacheon-gun and Samcheonpo-si. Today, it combines a vibrant maritime district with industrial centers and agricultural countryside.

The city is geographically split across Sacheon Bay. To the north lies Sacheon-eub, positioned at the head of the bay near neighboring Jinju. The southern section consists of the former Samcheonpo-si, situated at the entrance of the bay where it opens into the sea. Between these two distinct urban hubs lies a narrow coastal plain dominated by fruit-producing orchards along with wet and dry farmland.

The area boasts a deep archaeological heritage centered around trade between inland regions and the coast. During the Middle Mumun pottery period around 700 to 550 B.C., the Igeum-dong site in Samcheonpo served as a prominent settlement, ceremonial ground, and megalithic burial area. Furthermore, nearby offshore landmasses such as Neuk-do Island and Ma-do Islet facilitated ancient maritime commerce connecting local communities with chiefdoms in Western Japan, China's Liaoning region, and the Taedong-gang River area.

In the south, Samcheonpo functions as a busy marine hub with a long tradition of fishing. Visitors to the harbour district can explore traditional markets and a major fish market, or dine at the rustic raw fish eateries lining the waterfront. The harbour also acts as a gateway to several small offshore islands where residents maintain fishing practices that trace their origins back to the Jeulmun Period around 4000 B.C.

In contrast, Sacheon-eub in the north serves as a commercial and industrial focus. The area hosts high-tech aerospace initiatives, including Korean Aerospace Industries, the Korea AeroSpace Administration, and an expansive aerospace industrial complex development. Manufacturing and service sectors thrive here due to convenient access to key transport corridors and nearby Jinju.

Travelers reaching Sacheon can utilize Sacheon Airport, located in Sacheon-eup, which operates two daily domestic flights to Gimpo Airport in Seoul. Bus terminals in both Sacheon-eup and Samcheonpo offer regular regional connections to cities such as Busan, Masan, and Jinju, while national passenger rail services are accessible via the train terminal in neighboring Jinju.
