Why Salina
Salina is a city located in North Central Kansas, serving as the seat of Saline County and a major regional hub for trade, industry, and education. Originally established along the historic Smoky Hill Trail, the community developed into a commercial center supporting agricultural, manufacturing, and corporate operations. It is home to institutions of higher learning, including Kansas Wesleyan University and the KSU College of Technology and Aviation.
The city rests in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains at an elevation of 1,224 feet. It lies near the junction of Interstate 70 and Interstate 135, positioning it 81 miles north of Wichita, 164 miles west of Kansas City, and 401 miles east of Denver. The natural geography of the area is defined by nearby waterways, with the Smoky Hill River running through the eastern portion of the city and the Saline River flowing just to the north. Smaller streams, including Dry Creek and Mulberry Creek, also course through the landscape.
The region was historically inhabited and hunted by several Native American nations, including the Kansa, Pawnee, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux. Following a conflict between tribal groups in 1857 near a sandstone butte known as Indian Rock, settlers established the Salina Town Company in 1858 near the modern locations of Riverside Park and Founders Park at 5th Street and Iron Avenue. Named for the Saline River, the settlement acted as a key supply stop for westbound migrants and gold prospectors before officially incorporating as a city in 1870. The arrival of the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1867, a brief period as a trail town for the cattle trade, and the widespread cultivation of wheat and alfalfa transformed Salina into a major flour milling center. In the 1940s, the construction of the Smoky Hill Army Airfield—later Schilling Air Force Base—fueled further growth before the facility was eventually repurposed into a municipal airport and industrial park.
Salina features a climate that transitions between humid subtropical and humid continental zones. Summers are typically hot and humid, while winters are cold and dry, with the highest rainfall occurring between May and August. The area receives an average of 16.6 inches of snow per year, most frequently in January. The city is easily reached by automobile via the major interstates crossing central Kansas.
