Salona, located in modern-day Solin just six kilometers from Split, Croatia, is the largest archaeological park in the country and a fascinating ancient site to explore. Once the bustling capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, this historical metropolis was founded in the third century BC along a sheltered inlet on the Adriatic coast. It eventually grew to house between 60,000 and 80,000 inhabitants before its seventh-century destruction during Avar and Slav invasions.

As you wander through the gently sloping karst terrain, you will encounter remarkable surviving Roman features that bring its rich past to life. Highlights of the site include ancient city walls fortified with towers, a forum, a theatre, public baths, an aqueduct built under Emperor Augustus, and an impressive amphitheatre. Salona was also the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian and played a pivotal role in early Christian history, serving as a major center for sacred architecture.

You can examine the ruined episcopal center, which features twin basilicas, a baptistery, and the Bishop's Palace, alongside the historic cemetery complex at Manastirine. Today, Salona offers an insightful, uncrowded glimpse into Roman and early Christian heritage right on Split's doorstep.
