Temple of Jupiter, Split 🇭🇷

Nestled in the western, religious section of Diocletian's Palace near the central Peristyle square, the Temple of Jupiter is an essential stop during your visit to Split, Croatia. Built between 295 and 305 to honor the supreme Roman god Jupiter, this historic monument was later converted into a Baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist during late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Renowned architect Robert Adam even considered it one of Europe's most beautiful monuments. Outside, you will be greeted by one of the twelve Egyptian sphinxes brought to the palace by Emperor Diocletian, alongside doorways adorned with reliefs depicting gods and heroes like Victoria, Hercules, and Apollo. Inside, admire the impressive barrel coffered vault, which heavily influenced Dalmatian early Renaissance art.

You will also find a striking bronze statue of St. John the Baptist sculpted by Ivan Meštrović, sarcophagi holding former Archbishops of Split, and a 13th-century baptismal font constructed from 11th-century altar screens. Look closely at these marble screens to spot intricate Croatian interlace motifs, symbolic religious artwork, and the oldest known representation of a Croatian king with his subjects.
