Why Samundri
Samundri is a city and tehsil headquarters situated in the Faisalabad District of Punjab, Pakistan. Standing at an elevation of 168 meters above sea level, the municipality serves as a significant urban center within the region. Geographically, it is located 45 kilometers from Faisalabad, 30 kilometers from Gojra, 46 kilometers from Sahiwal, 66 kilometers from Jhang, and 15 kilometers from Tandlianwala. Travelers reaching the area benefit from proximity to the Karachi-Lahore Motorway via the Samundari Interchange on the Samundari-Tandlianwala Road, which links the city conveniently to Multan and Lahore.
The historic trade route passing through the location dates back to the reign of Sher Shah Suri. Modern settlement began in 1887 when the site was designated as Chak No. 533 G.B. The municipality was subsequently called Seh Mundri, combining the Persian word for three and the Sanskrit word for temple, in recognition of three local Hindu shrines. Over time, these original religious structures disappeared, with the remaining site currently utilized by Government Primary School No 4. Following the August 1947 partition, minority Hindu and Sikh populations relocated to India, while Muslim immigrants arriving from Eastern Punjab settled in the town.
Culturally, Samundri is widely recognized for its athletic legacy, supplying numerous prominent players to the national Kabaddi team of Pakistan, particularly from rural locations such as Chak 176 G.B and 478 G.B. The local population includes many Jat, Rajput, and Gujjar agriculturalists. Economically, the urban center functions as a major commercial center for whole corn, grain, and sugar trading. Local agriculture heavily relies on sugarcane and wheat cultivation, while water limitations keep rice production at lower levels. Local farming also supplies half of the area's vegetable demand. Additionally, the city is noted for its specialized custom truck painting industry.
Commerce in the city is anchored by Anarkali Bazaar, the primary commercial hub, alongside Jinnah Market, which stands as the oldest trading area. Additional busy marketplaces include Nehar Bazaar, Mandi Bazaar, Jamat Ali Bazaar, Katchery Bazaar, Qasim Bazaar, Kashmiri Bazaar, Chaki Bazaar, and Sunny Plaza. The municipality provides a range of amenities, including educational institutions such as Government Graduate College Samundari and Punjab College. Financial services are well established across the city, supported by institutions including the National Bank of Pakistan, Habib Bank Limited, United Bank Limited, and Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited.
