Why San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca
San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, commonly referred to simply as Catamarca, is the capital and largest urban area in Argentina's Catamarca Province. Positioned in the northwestern part of the country along the Río Valle River, the city sits at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level at the base of Cerro Ambato. It encompasses an area of 684 square kilometers and houses a significant portion of the province's total population within its urban limits and surrounding suburban areas.
Spanish colonists initially established a settlement called Londres in the region in 1558, though the permanent town was officially founded in 1683 by Fernando de Mendoza y Mate de Luna. The name Catamarca derives from the Quechua language, meaning fortress on the slope. The settlement developed gradually over the centuries, reaching 8,000 residents by 1882 before being connected to the railway network in 1888.
Today, the city serves as the primary travel hub for the province, drawing visitors with its historic colonial architecture and proximity to outdoor activities. A notable landmark is the Church of the Virgin of the Valley, constructed in 1694, which attracts numerous pilgrims visiting the venerated statue of Our Lady of the Valley. Beyond its religious heritage, the city functions as a starting point for excursions such as mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, and local wine tasting.
Agriculture forms the core of the local economy, relying on irrigation systems due to the dry environment. Fruit trees and vineyards thrive in the nearby oasis zones, supporting a regional wine industry alongside the production of food preserves and traditional handwoven ponchos. The area also relies on cattle farming, cotton cultivation, and active mining projects in locations such as Capillitas, Farallón Negro, and Bajo de la Alumbrera, which extract copper, gold, silver, and tin.
Catamarca experiences a warm semi-arid climate with an overall yearly average temperature of 20 °C. Summers bring warm weather with average high temperatures reaching 34 °C, whereas winter temperatures average a minimum of 5 °C and seldom drop below freezing point within the city itself. Rainfall in the valley is relatively limited and mostly occurs during summer thunderstorms, while precipitation on the surrounding high peaks frequently falls as snow. Travel to the city is facilitated by Coronel Felipe Varela International Airport, which provides direct flight connections to Buenos Aires.
