Why San Ramón de la Nueva Orán
San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, commonly referred to simply as Orán, is a prominent city situated in the northwestern province of Salta, Argentina. Located roughly 270 kilometers from the provincial capital of Salta, it functions as the seat of the Orán Department. It stands as the second most populous urban center in the province and serves as a vital geopolitical hub for the entire Bermejo Region, hosting several federal administrative offices, a regional university center, and a Catholic diocese.
The settlement was established on August 31, 1794, by Ramón García de León y Pizarro, a Spanish military leader and governor of Salta. He named the town after Saint Raymond Nonnatus, whose feast day coincided with the founding, as well as his own birthplace of Oran in present-day Algeria.
Geographically, the surrounding environment features ecotonic forests positioned between the tropical Chaco woodlands and the Yungas jungles. This natural backdrop historically supported a strong timber trade. Additionally, the local economy relies heavily on an expansive agroindustrial sector. Major agricultural outputs include sugarcane, citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit, peppers, bananas, cherimoya, papayas, mangoes, and a small quantity of coffee. The region is also notable for extensive bean cultivation, soy and corn production for biofuels, and a historic role in livestock trade as a transit stop for cattle and horses heading toward Bolivia.
The city experiences a humid subtropical climate categorized regionally as tropical serrano due to its location between the Andes to the west and the northern plains to the east. Summers in the region are hot and rainy, while the winter months are typically mild and dry.
Travelers can reach the area by road using National Route 50, which connects near National Route 34, facilitating commercial movement and transit toward the Bolivian border. A freeway project south of the city links it to Pichanal. Regional air travel to the provincial capital is accommodated via Orán Airport.
