Why Sanmenxia

Sanmenxia is a prefecture-level city situated along the southern bank of the Yellow River in western Henan Province, China. Positioned as the province's westernmost prefecture, it sits where the river carves through the Loess Plateau toward the North China Plain. The region shares borders with Shanxi Province to the north across the river, Shaanxi Province to the west, and the neighboring Henan jurisdictions of Luoyang and Nanyang to the east and south.

The surrounding landscape consists of mountainous terrain on three sides, with elevations generally rising from the northeast to the southwest. While most of the territory rests between 300 and 1,500 meters above sea level, the county-level city of Lingbao contains Henan's highest peak, reaching 2,413.8 meters. Sanmenxia experiences a four-season, monsoon-influenced continental climate featuring dry, cold winters and hot, humid summers. The annual mean temperature is 13.9 °C, with monthly averages spanning from −0.3 °C in January to 26.4 °C in July, and more than half of the yearly rainfall occurring between July and September.

The city's name translates to "The Gorge of Three Gateways," referencing two river islands that historically divided the Yellow River into three channels. Local folklore attributes these channels to Yu the Great, who was said to have carved the gorge with an axe to prevent floods, creating passages known as the Gateways of Man, Gods, and Devils. During the Western Zhou dynasty, the region formed part of the State of Western Guo, which maintained a capital at nearby Shangyang. In the Han and Tang dynasties, the turbulent local rapids created significant hazards for barges carrying grain upstream to Chang'an, leading to the construction of elevated gallery towpaths beginning around 150 AD.

Submerged historical passes were extensively researched by archaeologists prior to the completion of the Sanmenxia Dam in the late 1950s. Excavations across the prefecture have revealed ancient bronzeware and large chariot burial sites tied to Western Guo rulers. Travelers can visit the Shihao Section of the Xiaohan Ancient Road, an excavated route that forms part of the Silk Roads UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modern municipal features include the Sanmenxia Cultural Sports Centre Stadium, a 22,000-seat arena opened in 2011.

Administratively, the prefecture encompasses the urban districts of Hubin and Shanzhou, the county-level cities of Lingbao and Yima, and the counties of Lushi and Mianchi. Ground travel to and through the area is served by major regional routes, including China National Highway 209 and China National Highway 310.
