Why Santa Cruz de la Sierra
Santa Cruz de la Sierra, commonly known as Santa Cruz, is the largest city in Bolivia and the capital of the surrounding Santa Cruz department. Located along the Pirai River in the eastern tropical lowlands near the Amazon basin, the city sits at an elevation of roughly 400 meters above sea level near the eastern extent of the Andes Mountains. It forms the center of Bolivia's most populous metropolitan region, an urban conurbation encompassing seven municipalities including La Guardia, Warnes, Cotoca, El Torno, Porongo, and Montero.
Unlike the high-altitude urban centers in western Bolivia, Santa Cruz experiences a tropical monsoon climate characterized by warm conditions throughout the year. Its average annual temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius, with monthly averages remaining above 18 degrees Celsius. While warm weather predominates, cold winter winds known as surazos occasionally blow in from the Argentine pampas, causing brief temperature drops. Annual precipitation averages 1,321 millimeters, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in December and January.
The region was originally settled by indigenous groups, including the Chané, prior to European contact. Spanish explorer Ñuflo de Chavez founded the initial city in 1561 about 200 kilometers east of its current site, naming it after his hometown in Extremadura. Due to indigenous conflicts and local power struggles, the settlement was relocated multiple times before consolidating at its present location near the Pirai River in 1622. Remnants of the founding location can be viewed at the Santa Cruz la Vieja archaeological site. Throughout the colonial period, the town served as a agricultural outpost, a defense against Portuguese expansion, and a base for Jesuit missions in the Chiquitos and Moxos regions.
Santa Cruz remained relatively small until mid-20th-century agrarian and land reforms initiated a period of rapid development and urban expansion. Today, the city is Bolivia's primary commercial, financial, and industrial hub, producing nearly 35 percent of the country's gross domestic product and receiving over 40 percent of its foreign direct investment. The modern population is predominantly mestizo, shaped by historical mixing as well as substantial recent migration from other regions of Bolivia and foreign countries.
