Why Shanwei
Shanwei, also known as Swabue or Hailufeng, is a coastal resort city situated in eastern Guangdong Province along the South China Sea. Located approximately 120 kilometers east of Shenzhen, the municipality borders Jieyang to the east, Huizhou to the west, and Meizhou and Heyuan to the north. Comprising one district, one county-level city, and two counties, Shanwei is widely recognized for its extensive maritime shoreline, vibrant fishing heritage, and warm climate that supports a robust agricultural sector.
Historically governed under Huizhoufu during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Shanwei gained administrative independence in the Nationalist era before being officially established as a prefecture-level city in 1988. Following early Qing dynasty warfare that depopulated the region, Hoklo migrants settled in large numbers, shaping the local cultural fabric. Today, Southern Min dialects—specifically the Haifeng accent—are widely spoken throughout the area, alongside Hakka in rural districts like Luhe, while Cantonese is also common among younger residents due to regional ties. Shanwei is additionally remembered as one of China's early communist revolutionary centers.
Travelers to Shanwei can explore a diverse array of scenic mountain landscapes, cultural temples, and coastal destinations. Notable attraction areas include the Red Bay Tourist Area and the Jinxiang Beach Seascape Area in Lufeng, which showcase the city's prominent coastline. Historical and religious landmarks include the Fengshan Ancestral Temple Tourist Area, the Jieshi Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area, and the Fushan Mazu Tourist Area. Visitors can also tour historic sites connected to the region's revolutionary history, such as the Peng Pai Martyr's Former Residence and the Red Palace Red Square.
In addition to its coastal attractions, the surrounding countryside offers several ecological and mountain retreats. Prominent natural sites encompass the Haifeng Lotus Mountain Resort, Tongdingshan Tourist Area, Shuide Mountain Tourist Resort, and Lufeng Qingyun Mountain. Further inland, Luhe County features eco-tourism destinations such as the Luodong Shiwai Meiyuan Tourist Area, the God Elephant Mountain Park, and the Red Spine Forest Ecological Park.
Shanwei features a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate characterized by long, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 22.6 °C, with January being the coolest month and July the warmest. Rainfall is heavy, particularly between May and August, whereas autumn brings sunny, dry conditions, making October the month with the highest percentage of bright sunshine. The city is easily reached by train via the Xiamen–Shenzhen Railway.
