Why Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park is a long, narrow protected area situated along the Blue Ridge Mountains in north-central Virginia. The park spans across eight counties, bordered to the west by the Shenandoah River and its broad valley, and to the east by the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont. It extends for 105 miles from near Front Royal in the northeast to near Waynesboro in the southwest, with its administrative headquarters situated in Luray.

The landscape is defined by its mountainous crest, which serves as a drainage divide separating the Shenandoah River basin to the west from the James and Rappahannock River basins to the east. Topographic elevation differences exceed 3,000 feet in some locations, reaching its peak at Hawksbill Mountain, the park's highest summit at 4,051 feet. Nearly 40 percent of the park—comprising 79,579 acres—is preserved as federally designated wilderness. Geologically, the region features some of Virginia's oldest exposed bedrock, including billion-year-old granitic basement rock and metamorphosed basalt formations, such as the visible columns at Compton Peak.

The history of the park involves a multi-decade establishment process. Early legislative efforts began in 1901, leading to congressional authorization in 1926. Because federal funds were not allocated for land acquisition, the Commonwealth of Virginia raised private capital and utilized eminent domain to purchase more than 5,000 land parcels. This process forced many rural residents, homesteaders, and mountain communities to vacate the area. During this period, President Herbert Hoover set up a private fishing retreat at Rapidan Camp near the headwaters of the Rapidan River, which was eventually donated to the park. The Civilian Conservation Corps subsequently built park infrastructure, cleared chestnut blight timber, and constructed trails. Shenandoah National Park was officially established in December 1935 and formally dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in July 1936.

Visitors travel through the park primarily along Skyline Drive, a scenic roadway that traverses the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains and connects at its southern terminus to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Historical features include Rapidan Camp and Skyland Resort, which reopened for guests in 1937. Today, the park provides opportunities for public recreation, stewardship, and the preservation of central Appalachian natural and cultural heritage.
