Why Slidell
Slidell is a city located in southeastern St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, roughly three miles north of the northeastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Positioned about two miles inland within the Greater New Orleans area, it spans a total surface area of 15.2 square miles. The city sits at a low elevation of 13 feet and experiences a humid subtropical climate defined by warm, muggy summers and brief, mild winters, though its coastal proximity exposes it to occasional severe storms, winter blizzards, and heavy rain.
The town was initially settled in the 1830s when pioneers established log cabins and early timber operations in the area. Official founding occurred between 1882 and 1883 during the construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad, which linked New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi. Named after politician John Slidell, the municipality was formally chartered by the state legislature in 1888. Over the 20th century, the city expanded through industries such as creosote processing, brickmaking, shipbuilding, and lumber, later evolving into a major New Orleans suburb following the mid-century expansion of nearby space program facilities.
Visitors to Slidell can explore historic and outdoor features throughout the community. Olde Towne Slidell serves as the city's historic core along Front Street, housing local shops, dining establishments, and bars. The district is also home to the Slidell Museum on 1st Street, a free municipal venue showcasing local history and the community's origins as a rail stop. Along Bayou Lane, Heritage Park offers outdoor recreation and a public boat launch on land restored from a historic industrial site. Additional outdoor space can be found at John Slidell Park, situated off Robert Boulevard.
Travelers reach Slidell via several major transportation routes, including the intersection of Interstate 10, Interstate 12, Interstate 59, and U.S. Highway 11. The I-10 Twin Span Bridge and the Maestri Bridge connect the city across Lake Pontchartrain directly to New Orleans. Train travelers can access the city through Amtrak's Crescent service, which stops at the local station on Front Street. Aviation facilities are available nearby at the city-owned Slidell Airport, located a short distance northwest of the central business district.
