Why South Jordan
South Jordan is a city located in south-central Salt Lake County, Utah, approximately 18 miles south of Salt Lake City. Set within the Salt Lake Valley along the Jordan River, the community spans over 22 square miles between the Oquirrh Mountains to the west and the Wasatch Mountains to the east. Its terrain slopes gently from an elevation of roughly 4,300 feet near the river to 5,200 feet along the mountain foothills, featuring relatively flat ground shaped by prehistoric sediments left behind by ancient Lake Bonneville.
Long before European arrival, the surrounding region was inhabited by nomadic Desert Archaic hunter-gatherers and later Fremont villagers, while neighboring Native American tribes bordered the valley. French Canadian trapper Étienne Provost led a party along the Jordan River in 1824. Pioneer settlers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrived in the valley in 1847, and Alexander Beckstead became the first settler of South Jordan in 1859 after creating an irrigation ditch from the river. Historically reliant on agriculture, sugar beets, and livestock feed, the town incorporated in 1935 to secure federal funding for municipal water infrastructure. Over the decades, it evolved from a rural farming settlement into a rapidly growing suburban community.
South Jordan features notable religious architecture, having been the first city in the world to house two temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—the Jordan River Utah Temple and the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple. The community is also home to the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple. The western half of the municipality includes the master-planned Daybreak Community, which surrounds the 67-acre Oquirrh Lake as well as Downtown Daybreak, an urban center anchored by the Salt Lake Bees ballpark.
Outdoor recreation is centered around 37 public parks, local facilities, and natural spaces. A 3.5-mile portion of the Jordan River Parkway provides trails, wildlife habitats, and ponds stocked with rainbow trout and catfish by state wildlife officials. Additional attractions include an Aquatic and Fitness Center, executive and miniature golf courses at Mulligan's, and the 120-acre Equestrian Park, which features a horse racing track, polo grounds, and the annual Salt Lake County Fair every August. Transit access across the region is provided by three TRAX light rail stops and a FrontRunner commuter rail station.
