St. Michaelis Church, Hamburg 🇩🇪

Welcome to St. Michael's Church, colloquially known as Michel, Hamburg's largest Lutheran church and one of northern Germany's most famous Protestant Baroque landmarks. Purpose-built and dedicated to the Archangel Michael, you will spot a striking bronze statue above the main portal depicting the archangel defeating the devil.

Step inside the 2,500-seat sanctuary to admire its 20-meter marble altar, a sculpted marble pulpit by Otto Lessing, and five impressive organs, including a large Steinmeyer organ with 6,674 pipes. You can also view the white-marble seashell baptismal font from 1763, the historical Senate pews bearing Hamburg's coat of arms, and the site where composer Johannes Brahms was baptized in 1833. Beneath the church, explore the crypt where over 2,000 people were buried, including composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and architect Ernst Georg Sonnin.

Don't miss heading up the prominent 132-meter copper-covered clock tower—featuring Germany's largest clock faces—where an observation deck situated 83 meters above the ground offers you sweeping panoramic views across Hamburg and its bustling harbour. You can also hear a 300-year-old trumpet tradition played from the tower windows.
