Step into history at the Church of St. Nicholas (St.-Nikolai-Kirche) in Hamburg, Germany. Originally founded in 1195 as a wooden chapel dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, the site saw a 14th-century brick church destroyed in the Great Fire of 1842.
It was subsequently rebuilt as a soaring Gothic Revival cathedral by English architect George Gilbert Scott. Consecrated in 1863 and completed with a 147.3-meter spire in 1874, it briefly stood as the tallest building in the world until 1876. Today, the remains serve as a powerful memorial against war following heavy destruction during World War II aerial bombings in 1943 and the post-war demolition of its damaged nave.
